Old Philadelphia

I recently came across some collections of old photographs at the Web site of the Philadelphia Inquirer.  They show the history of the city as captured by the camera during the 20th century.  Here are a few examples out of hundreds available, altered in size to fit this blog.

Old Broad Street Railroad Station after the fire of June 1923

Toll booths at the then-new Benjamin Franklin Bridge, 1926

Philadelphia Police motorcycle squad during the Prohibition era, 1929

There are many more photographs in these two collections:

1.  Scenes of Old Philadelphia

2.  History of Philly Crime

They make interesting viewing for both history and photography buffs.

Back in the late 30s-early 40s, when my mother was growing up there, Philly cop cars were bright red, with 2 cops per - my maternal grandmother {a bookie & numbers runner} would refer to them as a "rotten tomato with two worms inside" ................... ;-)

Riding around in the side car with a tommy gun? Now that would be fun :)
